The hard part

Finding great Velero help is its own project

Hiring a strong Velero engineer, for the hours you actually need, is slow, risky, and expensive. Here is what teams keep running into.

  1. Months wasted hunting for a specialist who actually knows Velero.

  2. The wrong hire after weeks of interviews and onboarding.

  3. Full-time cost when the workload is genuinely part-time.

  4. Tech debt compounds while Velero sits half-finished between sprints.

  5. The roadmap stalls every time Velero work lands on the wrong desk.

  • Good consultants execute on task and deliver as planned. Better consultants overdeliver on their tasks. Great consultants become full technology partners and provide expertise beyond their scope. I am happy to call MeteorOps my technology partners as they overdelivered, provide high-level expertise and I recommend their services as a very happy customer.

A bit about Velero

Things you need to know about Velero before choosing a consulting partner.

01

What is Velero?

Velero is an open-source tool that automates backup, restore, and migration workflows for Kubernetes clusters and persistent volumes. It is commonly used by platform engineering and DevOps teams to make disaster recovery repeatable by capturing Kubernetes resource state, such as namespaces, deployments, and CRDs, together with the application data needed to recover from incidents, upgrades, or environment changes.

Velero runs inside the cluster and integrates with object storage and snapshot providers through plugins, enabling scheduled backups, retention policies, and standardized restore procedures across multiple environments. It is often implemented as part of broader platform engineering and governance practices on Kubernetes.

  • Back up and restore Kubernetes API resources, including custom resources
  • Snapshot and restore persistent volumes through supported storage integrations
  • Automate backup schedules with retention and lifecycle controls
  • Support cluster migration and environment replication workflows
  • Extend functionality through provider and feature plugins
02

Why use Velero?

Velero is a Kubernetes-native backup and restore tool that helps teams make cluster recovery, rollback, and migration repeatable through policy-driven automation and portable backup storage.

  • Backs up Kubernetes API resources such as Deployments, Services, Ingresses, ConfigMaps, Secrets, and many CRDs so teams can reconstruct cluster state after incidents or migrations.
  • Stores backups in external object storage (S3-compatible endpoints, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Blob), keeping recovery artifacts independent of any single cluster lifecycle.
  • Supports scheduled backups with retention controls (TTL) to standardize recovery points and reduce manual runbooks.
  • Enables namespace-scoped backups and restores, aligning with multi-tenant clusters and clearer ownership boundaries.
  • Allows selective restore with label selectors and resource filtering to reduce blast radius and speed up targeted recovery.
  • Integrates with CSI snapshots and supported cloud snapshot plugins to protect persistent volumes and improve restore performance for larger datasets.
  • Provides pre- and post-backup hooks to coordinate application consistency for workloads that need quiescing, flushing, or leader coordination.
  • Uses a plugin architecture for backup storage locations, volume snapshotters, and restore actions to support multi-cloud, hybrid, and on-prem Kubernetes environments.
  • Supports restore-time transformations such as namespace mapping and storage class remapping to simplify cluster migrations and environment rebuilds.
  • Exposes backup and restore status, events, and logs for integration into monitoring, auditing, and incident response workflows.

Velero fits platform and DevOps teams operating multiple clusters that need standardized recovery procedures and periodic restore testing. Common trade-offs include provider-specific snapshot behavior, Kubernetes and CRD version compatibility constraints during restore, and the need to separately protect data that lives outside the cluster (for example, managed databases and external object stores).

For implementation details and plugin support, see Velero documentation. Common alternatives include Kasten K10, Portworx PX-Backup, and cloud-provider backup services.

03

Why get our help with Velero?

Our experience with Velero helped us turn Kubernetes backup, restore, and disaster recovery into a predictable operational capability: implemented as code, validated through restore drills, and aligned to recovery objectives and governance across multiple clusters and environments.

Some of the things we did include:

  • Translated business recovery targets (RPO/RTO) into practical Velero schedules, retention policies, and scoped backups for namespaces, CRDs, cluster-scoped resources, and persistent volumes.
  • Implemented standardized backup policies across dev/stage/prod with consistent naming conventions, label selectors, and environment-specific retention to reduce drift and operator error.
  • Configured backup storage locations in cloud object storage with encryption, lifecycle rules, immutability where available, and least-privilege IAM, plus audit-friendly operational runbooks.
  • Deployed and maintained Velero via GitOps using Argo CD, keeping plugins, schedules, backup locations, and restore manifests version-controlled and reviewable.
  • Integrated CSI snapshots for stateful workloads, documented PV/PVC restore ordering, and added application-level verification steps to confirm data consistency after restores.
  • Hardened access for backup and restore operations with Kubernetes RBAC, dedicated service accounts, and controlled break-glass procedures for production restores.
  • Built automated restore testing that periodically restored selected namespaces into isolated clusters, captured evidence artifacts, and validated practical recovery boundaries.
  • Instrumented monitoring and alerting for backup freshness, schedule failures, and restore errors using Prometheus metrics, dashboards, and actionable on-call alerts.
  • Integrated pre-change backups and post-change validation into CI/CD workflows to reduce risk during cluster upgrades, controller changes, and application migrations.
  • Supported cluster rebuilds and migrations by restoring workloads into new clusters, validating service/ingress behavior, and coordinating cutovers with platform and application teams.

This experience helped us accumulate significant knowledge across multiple Velero use cases, from routine backup automation to controlled restores and continuous validation, and enables us to deliver high-quality Velero setups clients can rely on as their platforms evolve.

04

How can we help you with Velero?

Some of the things we can help you do with Velero include:

  • Assess your current Kubernetes backup/restore and disaster recovery posture and deliver a prioritized findings report with actionable remediation steps.
  • Define an adoption roadmap with workload tiers, ownership boundaries, and measurable RPO/RTO targets aligned to platform and application requirements.
  • Design and implement Velero for cluster resource and persistent volume protection, including schedules, retention policies, and restore validation workflows.
  • Standardize multi-cluster Velero deployments using Infrastructure as Code and GitOps practices (e.g., Terraform) for consistent, auditable configuration.
  • Implement security and governance guardrails such as least-privilege RBAC/IAM, encryption, secrets handling, and controlled restore permissions with separation of duties.
  • Optimize cost and performance by tuning backup frequency, snapshot strategy, retention windows, and plugin configuration to meet recovery objectives efficiently.
  • Operationalize day-2 reliability with observability, alerting, and runbooks to track backup success, restore readiness, and incident response actions.
  • Plan and run disaster recovery game days to prove end-to-end restores across dependencies and reduce recovery time during real incidents.
  • Enable platform and application teams with hands-on training for safe restores, troubleshooting, and ongoing maintenance and upgrade practices.
